Photojournalism

About This Project

I still have the paper I wrote for my Free Enterprise class taught by Kris Phelps at Westlake High School in the spring of 1980 — Case Study of “The Westlake Picyuane.” Yup. P-I-C-Y-U-A-N-E. Oops. Of course that’s supposed to be The Westlake Picayune. But at least I was consistent. I spelled it wrong throughout.

Regardless, the paper was my foot in the door to my first job: shooting page negatives for The Westlake Picayune. George Phenix was the publisher and his wife, Jann, was the editor. Great people. And a booming time in the community newspaper business.

George was famous outside the Southwest Austin community. “If you’re old enough to remember the Kennedy assassination and Jack Ruby’s murder of Lee Harvey Oswald—I took the film you saw on CBS of Ruby shooting Oswald. My Christmas bonus that year was $8.62,” he said in my paper. Now he’s published a book on the topic — When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963. His book probably got more traction than my paper typed on a real, old-fashioned typewriter.

But working at the newspaper turned me on to working in the news business. I still most enjoy covering spot news. But over the years, my interest in photojournalism has expanded well beyond just covering spot news. After all most people hate being woken up by a set of tones or a phone call at 3 a.m.

Here are some handouts and other materials I’ve developed over the years on photojournalism. You may certainly use these publications in the classroom but they are still copyrighted. And any materials that others have graciously allowed me to use are still copyrighted by those individuals.
