  • Journalism Education Association Advisers Institute, July 10-13, 2023 in Washington, D.C. Taught class to scholastic media advisers at this national workshop. Lead day-long team storytelling group that found stories, created stories and published stories.
  • Director of the Center for Editing Excellence at the University of Texas at Austin, May 22-June 3, 2023. Coordinated all curriculum for this training for college media interns. Brought in guest speakers, Craig Garnett, editor and publisher, Uvalde Leader- News and Philana Patterson, head of newsroom audio, Wall Street Journal. Taught classes along with co-director Beth Butler of Kent State University, Mark Grabowski of Adelphi University and Griff Singer of the University of Texas at Austin. During the last four days of the workshop, students produced a daily newspaper and website.

  • Adelphi University Press Day, virtual, Feb. 18 | Keynote speaker at the 26th annual Adelphi University Press Day Feb. 18 on “Covering Trauma and Tragedy” to a group of 126 high school students and advisers as part of the virtual event; sat on a panel coordinated by Mark Grabowski, JD, an associate professor at Adelphi, with Liza Burby, senior adjunct faculty at Adelphi, Kate Szymanski, associate professor of psychology at Adelphi, and Keldy Ortiz, Newsday reporter, and answered questions from the 243 high school students and 23 scholastic advisers from 18 high schools; taught two one-hour breakout sessions on “Photojournalism During a Pandemic.”

Photo contests alone brought in $7,680 for JEA.
  • College Media Association / Associated Collegiate Press, Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 25-28, 2018 | Coordinated on-site photography competition for about 30 college photographers including on-site critique, awarding a class favorite and coordinating judging after the conference. View entries. Taught three break-out sessions: “Videolicious,” “College Sports Photography” and “Everyone Needs a Copy Editor.” Completed four, one-hour critiques with individual college media staffs.
  • Amarillo College Media Day, Amarillo, Texas, Oct. 15, 2018 | Delivered opening keynote to 350 high school students and their instructors at this first-time event sponsored by Amarillo College and the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. Also taught hands-on session on photography and two break-out sessions, “Choosing and Editing Photos” and “Writing Photo Cutlines.” After lunch worked with about a dozen college photographers in hands-on workshop.

Photo contests alone brought in $6,860 for JEA.
  • Associated Collegiate Press / College Media Association national convention, Dallas, Oct. 25-29, 2017 | Taught hour-long classes including “The Best of College Sports Photography” and coordinated the on-site “Photo Shootout” contest.
  • Midwestern State University Social Media Day, Wichita Falls, Texas, Sept. 25, 2017 | Coordinated the university’s first even of this kind. 155 people registered. Coordinated publicity including creating posters and mailings to all area high schools. Produced name badges and registration materials. Produced one-page website for event. Obtained outside funding for meals for all high school students attending and T-shirts for all attendees. Taught 30-minute class, “Get on the Schedule” to about 100 members of the community, high school students and college students.

Coordinated judging of all conference competitions for conference with nearly 300 students in attendance at the University of Texas at Arlington. Produced closing awards presentation. Coordinated hands-on, three-hour “Cropped” contest. Taught hands-on class in “Social Media for Photographers.” Presented organization’s highest award, the Star of Texas, to Sherri Taylor of Syracuse University.

2016

Taught various hour-long classes: “Our Images Are Our Legacy” and “Why We Need Copy Editors.” Coordinated on-site photography competition for 260 students who submitted 1,224 images for critique in nine contests and judging by 30 professional photojournalists and educators nationwide. Photo contests alone brought in $5,200 for JEA.
  • Midwestern State University Social Media Day, Wichita Falls, Texas, Oct. 24, 2016 | Coordinated the university’s first even of this kind. About 100 people attended.   • Association of Texas Photography Instructors, Allen High School (Texas), June 11-13, 2014 | Taught pilot class in Photography and Social Media for high school photography instructors from several different states. Taught students how to interact with social media is a critical element of school curriculums. Utilizing social media to exhibit, critique and sell photography is a natural extension of the lessons learned in the classroom. From SmugMug to Pinterest and from Instagram to SnapSeed, this class explored the latest in social media apps while making sure that teachers have up-to-date lesson plans for helping students navigate and engage with the world through social media. Photoshop and Lightroom were both be utilized in the class.
